Mazara del Vallo (Zip Code 91026) is a coastal town in the province of Trapani.
It is 119 km. from Palermo and 54 km. from Trapani.
There are many beaches surrounding Mazara, most notably TONARELLA beach resort only a few metres from the villas, which is the largest and most famous in the entire province with crystal clear blue water, a beach that rivals miami beach in terms of its length and popularity, with daily tourist numbers reaching thousands in the summer months of July and August.
Mazara del Vallo is an area full of local attractions and is steeped in history such as the Castle of Tripi nearby and a cathedral church built in the 16th century with surrounding archeological areas with remains of Hellenistic and roman buildings and a necropolis.
The town is one of the most important Sicilian places for fishing and contributes 20% to national production. Various products such as vegetables, citrus fruits, olives, table and wine grapes are grown in the area. Mazara del Vallo was an ancient Phoenician port and it has been an important harbour town ever since.
Sometimes on the coast, and especially in the shipway, it is possible to observe the phenomenon of marrobbio (sessa) which consists of a swift and sudden turn of the water.
Another local attraction the Gorghi Tondi is a place of remarkable beauty and comprises of small expanses of water perfectly circular in shape, rich lake vegetation which is a striking contrast with the arid, sunny and stony view all around them. Their importance is enhanced by the presence of a dense series of migratory birds.
As a relevant fishing centre, Mazara is also well-known for its seafood-based cuisine. There are several local wine cellars and a number of wineshops in the city. However, in Mazara del Vallo is also located one of the few breweries of Sicily,
Mazara del Vallo is frequently linked during the day to many interesting destinations, such as Marsala (20 minutes) and Castelvetrano-Selinunte (25 minutes). Prices are fairly cheap. |
